Heavy rainfall floods Nafpaktos and Achaia in West Greece (videos)

Streams and rivers swell, homes were flooded and human lives were at risk, farming animals were drowned and corps were destroyed and infrastructure suffered extensive damage when huge volumes of rain water poured down in West Greece in the night from Saturday to Sunday.

A part of the Ionian Highway in the Ioannina direction was closed and motorists were trapped in Klokovas tunnel.

The bridge of Rio-Antirio was closed to traffic for two hours.

The areas most hit by the heavy rainfall were Nafpaktia in Aitolia-Akarnania  and Achaia in North-West Peloponnese.

The Fire Service had to intervene and rescue dozens of people trapped either in their homes or in vehicles.

In Drepano, Achaia, 1,000 people were trapped in an entertainment facility when rainwater leaked inside but they could not leave the area due to a flooded stream nearby. The Fire Service had to cut the road barriers so that motorists could leave the area.

Another rainfall on Sunday morning flooded a major road in Patras.

Greece has been battered by heavy storms and rainfalls in June and July, so far. Six foreign nationals and one Greek lost their lives last week when a supercell storm hit the Halkidiki peninsula.
