New Chios mayor bans civil marriages from Town Hall with church blessing

The new mayor of the island of Chios has decided that civil marriages will no longer be conducted at the Town Hall of the capital of the island.

Those couples who insist on civil marriage will have to travel several kilometers away and get married at the town halls of Vrontados in the North or Agios Minas Municipality.

“It is certain that such a decision, which creates serious social problems and undoubtedly degrades the institution of civil marriage,” notes local media astraparis.

The decision of mayor Stamatis Karmantzis has been welcomed by the Bishop of Chiso, Markos, who had asked also the former municipal authorities to abstain from conducting civil marriages.

The decision of the new municipal authority will be implemented immediately with the possibility that a few civil marriages to be conducted as they were already registered for it.

With this move the new mayor sets a mark for the beginning of new social morals on Chios, notes astraparis.
