Records of Greek summer: Heat, extreme weather phenomena, thunderbolts

The meteorological service of the Greek National Weather Observatory has released the significant features and records of summer 2019, for the time period June, July and August. Summer 2019 had everything: heat, extreme weather phenomena and thousands of thunderbolts.

The data refer to highest recorded temperature, number of thunderbolts, wind speed and other peculiarities of this year’s Greek summer.

– The highest temperature recorded by the Observatory’s meteorological station network was 41.9 degrees in Halki, Larissa on 8 July. In Attica the record was recorded at the Harokopio area of the south suburb of Athens, Kallithea: 39.5° C on July 4th.

– The highest wind intensity  was recorded in Neos Marmaras, Halkidiki: 132 km/h on July 10. The maximum the maximum wind speed was recorded in Paximida Karystos: 132 km/h on June 26.

The days with the strongest summer north winds “meltemi” in the Aegean Sea were on 12. July and 24. August.

– The maximum short-term -10 minutes duration – rainfall was on Penteli Mt: 20mm on June 19, while the maximum daily rainfall was recorded at Zagora of Pelion Mt: 105 mm on July 17.

– Regarding lightning, around 68,000 fell in June, 46,500 in July and 8,500 in August. The maximum lightning activity was recorded on July 10 and 11 in Northern Greece and the North Aegean during the deadly and destructive super cell storm that struck Halkidiki.

– The most significant bad weather front  in summer 2019 was “Antinos”, on July 14-17. The  barometric low from Italy reached Greece and caused storms and low for the season temperatures, to an extent unprecedented in the last decades for southeastern Greece and thus in July.
