A six-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool near Pylos in south-western Peloponnese on Thursday. His 32-year-old mother worked as a cleaner in a touristic facility and had taken the child with her during the work.
According to local media, information indicates that the little boy probably stumbled and fell into the pool, without being immediately noticed as the mother was busy with work.
When she spotted the child unconscious in the pool she alerted her colleague and the two women called the ambulance service.
Rescuers rescuers immediately rushed to the scene and began resuscitation efforts with CPR, while the child was transferred to the Pylos Health Center.
Despite the efforts of doctors and rescuers, the six-year-old boy did not manage to stay alive.
The child’s mother has been reportedly arrested for manslaughter by negligence and is a state of shock.
As part of the preliminary investigation, an autopsy has been ordered in order to clarify the causes of the little boy’s death.
Mother and son of the single-parent family were very close and she cared for him with great devotion, friends and neighbors in Gargliani where they lived told local media.
A similar accident took place a few years ago on the island of Naxos.
