The captain of a cruise ship calling at the northwestern island of Corfu has been arrested after a passenger accidentally fell into the harbor when strong winds broke the vessel’s moorings, authorities said on Wednesday.
The Coast Guard said in a statement that the 56-year-old Italian master of the Bahamas-flagged cruise ship faced charges of endangering his passengers. It said the accident occurred late Tuesday as winds lashed the section of the island capital’s harbor where international shipping docks.
According to the statement, as the moorings broke, the gangway tilted away from the quay and a 56-year-old woman from New Zealand who was on it fell into the water.
She was fished out by the ship’s crew and harbor personnel and taken to the island’s hospital to be treated for light injuries. [ via kathimerini]
