A four-story apartment building collapsed in Petralona district of Athens at noon on Tuesday. Five people detained. All residents in the building at the time of collapse appear to have escaped in time.
According to information available so far:
- the apartment building consists of four floors with seven apartments
- the collapse occurred during the execution of construction works next to the building, the Fire Department said.

The apartment building collapsed in sections at 13:00 and three of the four residents managed to immediately exit the building. A student and an elderly woman were initially reported as missing but relatives informed authorities later that they were both OK. The student was on vacations.
Firefighters and rescue teams with trained dogs continue searches in the debris for possible trapped residents who have not been sought by their relatives.
The collapsed building two years earlier.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the construction workers digging at the foundation of the at the neighboring building realized a stability problem and started to ring the bells telling the residents to abandon the building as soon as possible.
Initial reports indicated that four people who lived in the apartment building were missing. Three of them managed to escape immediately as the building started to collapse in parts.
Citing police sources, ERT reported that five people have been brought to the Petralona police station: the constructor, the owner of the the building plot and the construction workers. They will be questioned about the works that was being carried out and provide explanations and to determine whether they had the relevant permits.
The mobilization of fire department units, rescuers with dogs, ambulances and police was immediate, while three hospitals on duty were ready to treat possible injured people.

Search and rescue operations are in full swing for any trapped people and will continue until it is certain that there are no people trapped in the collapsed building.
