Elderly woman injured in Thessaloniki arson attacks dies in hospital

The elderly woman who got injured during the arson attacks targeting ruling New Democracy members in Thessaloniki passed away on early evening on Wednesday, July 1.

She was intubated in the ICU of Ippokrateio Hospital and was the mother of one of targeted ND members, Afroditi Nestora, a local politician.

The woman died a few hours after the arson attack in the early morning hours of Wednesday.

According to earlier media information, the attack with makeshift gas canisters set vehicles in the parking lot of the apartment building on fire. The politician, her parents and some other residents rushed to extinguished the blaze.

The woman got seriously injured, while her husband and three other people were taken with respiratory problems to the hospital as well.

She was admitted to the ICU of the Ippokrateio hospital in Thessaloniki with severe burns all over her body.

The circumstances of her injury are now being reportedly the focus of the authorities’ investigations. It is officially not known whether the victim got injured when a gas canister exploded or from the flames in the vehicles.

According to latest information by Mega TV, the woman got injured when the fuel deposit of a vehicle on fire exploded. She suffered burn injuries to 80% of her body.

So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The Anti-Terror Department has launched a manhunt to identify and capture the perpetrators of the attacks who will possibly face more severe charges of felony after the death of the woman.
