Greece’s Civil Protection warns of “very high risk” of fires, Sept 14

As the powerful winds continue over the weekend, the Greek Civil Protection has issued a warning for “very high risk” of forest and wild fires for Saturday, September 14, 2019.

Affected areas are: Attiki, Kythera, Sterea, Thessaly, East Macedonia, Thrace, North and South Aegean, Crete and Peloponnese.

Orange marks “very high risk”, Yellow “high risk.”

Prolonged dryness , high temperatures and strong winds increase the risks for wild and forest fires.

On Friday, several fires broke out in Attica and other regions of Greece. One man lost his life in a blaze in West Peloponnese.

Gusty winds up to 9 Beaufort in the Aegean sea have forced ferries to remain docked since Friday afternoon – and probably all through Saturday, as well.
