Refugees and migrants flows to the islands of the eastern Aegean Sea continues without break and 694 people arrived on the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos between early morning Monday and Tuesday afternoon.
According to latest data, 26,000 refugees and migrants are currently hosted on the eastern Aegean islands. Lesvos has seen the most arrivals with 2,427 people to have arrived since beginning of September. The hot spot of Moria reportedly houses 10,751 people. The island of Chios hosts 3,156 people, while Samos offers accommodation to 4,941 refugees and migrants.
Migration policy minister, Giorgos Koumoutsakos, has called on the European Union to step up and deal with the Migration crisis.
He said that the incoming European Commission’s priority to forge a new EU migration policy affords Mediterranean states the opportunity to underscore their own concerns.
Koumoutsakos stressed that between 4,500 and 5,000 migrants entered the EU from its eastern Mediterranean frontier last month, nearly four times more than anywhere else in the Mediterranean.
He said that the EU’s deal with Turkey on stemming migrant arrivals must be implemented.
That means Greece will increase migrant returns while Turkey must eliminate people trafficking rings and prevent the creation of new migrant routes into the EU. [AP, others]
