Nobel Peace Prize 2020: Greece nominates the European Court of Human Rights

Greece has nominated the European Court of Human Rights for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, following a government decision, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. This initiative is the result of coordinated actions by the Greek government, headed by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The relevant letter to the Nobel Committee, whereby the Greek government nominates the European Court of Human Rights for the Nobel Peace Prize, was sent on January 31 by  Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.

Greece greatly appreciates the work of the European Court of Human Rights, an important institution for protecting human rights and safeguarding international justice, and recognizes its wider contribution to the establishment and promotion of global peace.

The fact that Greece will hold the next Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (May–November 2020), the thrust of which will be the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights, the application of which is monitored by the European Court of Human Rights, is an additional reason for this nomination, the ministry statement concludes.
