Rhodes: “I’m donkey, I park where I want!” Campaign against illegal parking

Motorists on the island of Rhodes found not so polite stickers on their cars that they parked illegally. “I’m a donkey and I park where I want,” the stickers read, reminding them that donkeys may b gentle and patient animals but in Greece we also use the word for rude people.

Anyway, a local company active in the road assistance has launched again its campaign to raise awareness against illegal parking on Rhodes, a phenomenon that has reached dimensions of high concern.

Motorists reportedly park their vehicles wherever they want: they block traffic for people with disabilities and pedestrians, mothers with strollers and elderly, block access to buildings and sidewalks, and occupy reserved parking slots.

The campaign has been embraced by the local community, as illegal parking, and especially the indifference drivers of cars and motorbikes has become out of control especially when it come to access by people with disabilities.

The campaign was launched a few weeks ago with 100 “Donkey”-stickers to have already decorated the front window of the motorists uncaring about the other people.

Initially the company helped with it own vehicles and removed cars blocking access to people with disabilities in fornt of the City Hall on Sundays.

In cooperation with traffic police, the company removes the illegally parked cars, the owner has to pay a fee of 200 euros. In additions, the traffic police impose a fine and administrative penalties according to the Traffic Penal Code that include a fine of up to 2,000 euros and removal of the driving license for a specific time.

The company “Siech road assistance” donates the money it collects from the fees to institutions accommodating children with disabilities.

The campaign organizers want to soon extend their actions also on weekdays.

They plan similar actions in Athens and Thessaloniki.
