Coronavirus Greece: Confirmed cases soar to 695, projection 8K-10K infected

With 71 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, the number of corovavirus infections soared to 695, Greece’s health authorities announced on Monday afternoon. Confirmed cases are located in 28 regional units with the majority of them, that is 292 cases being in Athens, with another 25 in East Attica and another 22 in Piraeus.

56% of confirmed infection are men aged 18-64, while 21% are over 65.

114 patients are hospitalized with 61% of them being men.

35 of the hospitalized patients are intubated and have an average age of 68 years old. 34 of them are men.

74% of the intubated patients have underlying health problems.

29 patients have been discharged from hospitals.

17 people have died since the beginning of the outbreak.

Spokesman of National Health Organization Sotiris Tsiodras said that that next to cough, fever and respiratory problems, patients have also suffering from gastroenterological symptoms.

He added that a new characteristic of the infection is the loss of smelling sense. He did not elaborate on the percentage of the patients without smelling sense or with gastro symptoms.

He underlined that based on mathematics models the number of infected people across Greece must be at 8,000 to 10,000.

“I expect increase of the infections, but we have bought time,” Tsiodras said adding “I can’t say that the curve has decreased but certainly it has not dramatically increased.”
