Twenty-nine beaches in Athens and Attica are unsuitable for swimming due to high concentration of microbes, the Panhellenic Center for Ecological Research (PAKOE) has found in repeated inspections and water analyses.
The repeated inspections reveal in June showed a worrying increase in unsuitable beaches in popular destinations in the Attica basin.
The PAKEO has carried out new water inspections in Attica, following the prescribed instructions for microbiological loads. The aim was to determine which beaches are considered safe for the public and which are not.
Comparing the June results of survey conducted on June 15, 2026 with those of a month earlier, in Mayn shows a clear deterioration in the situation.
The number of beaches deemed unsuitable for swimming has increased significantly, which raises concerns about the water quality.
In Eastern Attica, the Porto Rafti area has the largest number of unsuitable samples. Increased microbial loads were also detected in Legraina, Sounio, Keratea, Vravrona, Artemida (Loutsa) and Rafina.
The most intense burdens are observed in Piraeus and Paleo Faliro, while significant problems are also recorded in the wider area of Anavyssos and Palea Fokaia.
PAKOE investigates the water quality in terms and the load of E. coli and enterococci.
