Acropolis opens again for exclusive private tours at €5,000

The Acropolis of Athens opens again for small exclusive guided tours away from the masses of tourists who visit the “Holy Rock” during the normal visiting hours.

The price of 5,000 is a bit high, however, a personalized guided tour of up to five people “under the  first light of dawn or the glow of an Attic suns” is a special experience as the organizers praise the project.

At the same time, “a premium experience package are transforming a visit to Greece’s most iconic monument into an exclusive, immersive encounter with history.”

Rather than a standard sightseeing tour, the archaeological site opens exclusively for small groups of one to five visitors during hours when it is closed to the general public.

The initiative, known as “The Acropolis Experience“, is a special guided-tour programme launched by the Ministry of Culture and the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development. I

t has emerged as one of the most talked-about additions to Greece’s tourism offering.

The special tour program was first launched in 2024 as a pilot project.

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), its director Angeliki Maragkaki said 2024 served as the programme’s foundation year.

“It was a period of strict pilot operation, during which only eight targeted, personalized tours were deliberately conducted in order to test and optimize the experience in detail,” the program director Angeliki Maragkakis told state-run news agency amna.gr.

At the same time, it invested in international promotion through the “The A[CROP]olis Experience” campaign, which gained significant recognition after being selected and featured by the internationally renowned advertising magazine Lürzer’s Archive.

The investment began to pay off in 2025, with bookings rising sharply to 72 personalized visits. The trend has accelerated further in 2026, with confirmed bookings already reaching 80 at the start of the summer season.

With each tour priced at 5,000 euros, the programme is now generating substantial revenue, expected to exceed 400,000 euros.

The proceeds are reinvested directly into the protection, conservation and promotion of Greece’s cultural heritage.

Privacy redefines luxury travel

Visitor data point to a growing trend among high-end travellers seeking more exclusive and tailored cultural experiences.

The tours are strictly limited to groups of up to five people. Maragkaki said that despite receiving numerous requests for larger groups, the organization has chosen to maintain the cap as a core principle of the programme.

“Only in this way can we preserve the quality and sense of exclusivity that define the experience,” she said.

Perhaps the most notable trend is the growing preference for even more personalised visits. Couples and individual travellers are increasingly choosing to pay the full fee in exchange for complete privacy during their visit to the monument.

According to the Organisation, this shift reflects a broader trend among affluent travelers, who are increasingly seeking authentic, immersive cultural experiences rather than conventional guided tours.
