An earthquake measuring 5,1 on the Richter scale has shaken the island of Karparthos in the Aegean Sea shortly before noon on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
Other seismological institutes recorded 5.3 R.
According to initial data from the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens the earthquake occurred at 11:25 a.m. its epicenter was located in the sea area just 7 km off Karpathos and its focal depth was 10 km.

According to other seismological institutes the earthquake has an intensity of 5.3 R.
It is classified as a “surface tremor” and that’s is why it was particularly felt on the island and surrounding areas.
A special feature of the tremor is its shallow focal depth, estimated at 10 kilometers, classifying the earthquake as a surface tremor.
It is worth noting that this main tremor of 5.1 Richter was preceded by intense micro-seismic activity in the wider area in the morning hours, with smaller tremors of 1.2 to 1.9 Richter.
So far, no serious material damage or injuries have been reported, however, local authorities and scientists are closely monitoring the development of the phenomenon to determine whether it is the main earthquake.
Karpathos is located several kilometers north of the South Aegean Fault line.
