A nursing home in Nea Makri, east of Athens, was placed in quarantine late on Sunday, after one employee was tested positive on COVID-19. The test results alarmed authorities and health teams visited the facility in south-eastern Attica to take test samples from a total of 122 people, residents and workers.
10 elderly and 2 employees were tested positive. The oldest elderly is reportedly 101 years old.
The elderly were transferred to the designated hospital Sotiria in Athens late on Sunday, local media report, adding that also other elderly with symptoms were taken to the hospital.
Some employees who went to work on Monday morning they were not allowed inside.
Nursing homes are considered as high risk factors for the transmission of coronavirus due to congestion of vulnerable people who in addition have chronic health problems.
Professor of Infectious Diseases and spokesman of the National Health Organization Sotiris Tsiodras and the head of Civil protection Nikos Hardalias visited the nursing home on Sunday.
According to official data, 98 people have died since the outbreak of the virus in Greece, while the total number of confirmed cases was at 2,114 as of Sunday afternoon.
