Burglar breaks into Rhodes restaurant, calls police to arrest him

An incredible and unusual case with a burglar on the island of Rhodes. A 48-year-old man broke into a restaurant to steal something to eat and then called the police to come and arrest him.

The incident took place in the early morning hours of last Friday in the center of the city of Rhodes.

The burglar broke in order to steal some food. There was no food around, so he took money form the cash register. Then he realized that several surveillance cameras had recorded him. Realizing that his arrest was a matter of time as he is a resident of the island, he called the police.

“I am a burglar. I broke in in order to steal, but I regretted it. I’m waiting for you to arrest me here, “he told police, local newspaper rodiaki reports on Monday.

Within minutes, police officers arrived at the restaurant, handcuffed the burglar and informed the restaurant owner.

Speaking to rodiaki, restaurant owner Giorgos Leventis confirmed the unprecedented incident.

“I told police that I wanted to talk to the man,” he said adding that when he arrived at the restaurant he found out that only a few coins left in the cash register were missing.

The burglar told him that he broke into the restaurant because he had nothing to eat and he regretted it, Leventis said.

“I felt sorry for him. I did not sue him. I will not ask for his prosecution. I also gave him 20 euros that I had with me at that time so that he could buy something to eat,” Leventis added.

The burglar was “certainly neither a drug addict nor anything like that,” the restaurant owner said adding that he had a Greek ID but did not look Greek.

Even if the owner showed generosity towards a human being in need, authorities are expected to file a lawsuit against the 48-year-old man and bring him to justice, rodiaki notes.

If you are hungry and steal to feed yourself,is this a crime? It is one of the basic fundamental human rights to have access to food so as not to die.And if he was a drug addict?Drug addicts also are humans and have rights,we must never forget that and never forget that every drug addict is someones baby whos gone wrong but can be mended.
