“Alert” in Greece with 153 new coronavirus cases, total infections at 5,123

153 new confirmed coronavirus cases have rung the alarm bells in Greece as it is the second highest number of daily infections registered in the country since the outbreak in February. The number of total infections has surpassed the 5,000 mark and reached 5,123 on Thursday. The highest record of daily cases was on April 21 with 156 confirmed infections.

The majority of new cases are domestic ones, have been detected again in the urban centers in Attica and Thessaloniki with a spike of 40 and 38 new infections respectively.

Daily tanea notes that “tt seems that the attempt to control the pandemic by both the state and the people was not the right one. Scientists are now worried about the worst.”

Epidemiology professor Charalambow Gogos told Alpha TV that the fact that the daily cases are 3-digits means that “we are moving on a red line.”

18 of the new cases have been detected among travellers.

No new death recorded in the last 24 hours, even though the number of intubated patients increased.

With infections increasing on a daily basis, despite the new restrictions, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis appealed at Greeks’ highest virtue on Wednesday saying the Philotimo is “our national vaccine” against the coronavirus.

The Ro=1 said the country’s top epidemiologist, Infectious Diseases professor Sotiris Tsiodras said on Tuesday, meaning that one infected transmits the virus to another person.

Geographical distribution August 6

The new 153 new cases on Thursday have been detected:

11  at the entry points in Greece.

7 more travellers voluntarily sought laboratories for Covid-19 test in the country after they developed some symptoms. They were tested positive.

The remaining new cases are spread across 20 regional units:

40 in Attica

38 in Thessalonik

14 in Larissa, 9 in Cyclades and 4 in Evros (all related to a wedding)

Each 3 in Corinth, Ilia, Corfu, Pella, Halkidiki

Each 2 in Argolida, Achaia, Ioannina, Kavala, Magnisia( related to a military camp)

Each 1 in Thesprotia, Kilkis, Kozani, Messinia, Chania (Crete)

8 of the 9 cases in Cyclades are reportedly related to a bar on a island.

The 3 infections in Ilia reportedly refer to two workers and one doctor at the Refugees Accommodation Center in Myrsini. The two workers have returned from vacations.

General information August 6

According to the Health Ministry statement on Thursday, the daily growth from Wednesday to Thursday is 3.1% from 2.6% like the previous 24 hours.

54.6% of the total of infected are men.

Of the total coronavirus cases, 1,370 (27.1%)  are related to travel abroad, 2,551 (49.8%) are related to an already known case. The rest are cases not related to travel or another known case or are still under investigation.

Average age of the infected in 49 with age range between 0 and 102.

The rolling average number of infections in the last 7 days is 105 from 42  last Thursday, July 30.

Number of patients intubated in ICUs increased to 14. Among them are 3 women. Average age of the intubated patients is 70.

64.3% of intubated patients had underlying health issues and age over 70 years.

129 patients have been discharged from the ICUs since the beginning of the outbreak.

Number of coronavirus-related deaths remains at 210.

Among the deceased were 67 women. The average age of the deceased was 76 with range age between 35 and 102.

95.7% had underlying health issues and/or were over 70 years old.

Tests

Total coronavirus tests since the beginning of the outbreak in February is 619,393. Of them 6,973 (1.13%) were positive.

Of 9,810 tests in the last 24 hours, 1.56% were positive.
