Wildfires rage in East Attica, settlements evacuates in Kalivia, Anavyssos, Keratea

East Attica wildfires: Church bells were ringing calling the residents of Anavyssos to evacuate the area; a police car was also calling on people to leave the area in southern East Attica as the fire front had already reached the yards of some houses. Thick smoke has turned day into dusk. A woman wearing an anti-virus mask was seeing on live streaming of state broadcaster ERT to water dry grass to prohibit the flames from reaching her home.

Several settlements in Anavyssos and neighboring Kalyvia have been already evacuated, the mayor of the area was practically going door to door telling locals and holidaymakers to evacuate.

Residents of a care home for elderly and a boarding school for children with special needs have been already transferred to safety.

Media reported earlier that the fire broke out when a car on the road to Nea Makri caught fire and the flames quickly grew as powerful winds have been blowing with intensity of 6-7 Beaufort.

Fire brigades with 117 firefighters, 35 fire trucks, 7 ground teams, 5 aircraft and 8 helicopters are struggling to get the fire under control.

Around 4 o’ clock Wednesday afternoon the residents of Keratea received alert messages via emergency number <112> urging them to leave their homes. An hour later, also residents of Anavyssos received evacuation alerts.

The wildfires currently seem to be raging in two fronts, one in Kalivia-Nea Makri and one Keratea-Anavyssos.
