At least eight confirmed cases of coronavirus were recorded since Sunday night in a single monastery of Mount Athos. Authorities have placed the Monastery of St. Paul in quarantine on Monday morning.
While the majority of infected monks has reportedly mild symptoms, one monk was transferred outside the Monk’s Republic after his health condition was considered as serious.
A team from the National Public Health Organisation (EODY) is heading for the Mount Athos peninsula. According to reports, at least two other coronavirus cases have. One in Chelandari monastery and one in Lakoskiti hermitage.
The Holy Community has kept the number of pilgrims visiting Mount Athos to a minimum, and all have their temperature checked before their departure from the ports of Ouranoupolis and Ierissos.
