Live briefing
Due to the extraordinary circumstances – highest number of daily infections- the government called again the country’s top epidemiologist and professor for infectious Diseases Sotiris Tsiordas to the weekly briefing.
Tsiodras said that in two weeks, around November 6, it will be clear if the latest measures of night curfew and mandatory use of masks in- and outdoors in 16 regional units will have been effective.
He added that the experts committee is considering new measures and that a relevant voting will take place on Thursday, Oct 28.
Among the scenarios under consideration are: night curfew to start earlier, decreased operation hours for bars and restaurants, increase of teleworking.
Referring to the impossible situation at public transport means in Athens and the daily enforced crowding for commuters, Tsiodras said “it is impossible to invest in public transport means.” [As he is a medical doctor and not a politician, Tsiodras could not explain why and he just forwarded the government’s message to the …foot soldiers!]
Stressing that “lockdown is the last option” he appealed to citizens to wear masks.
the increased infections are putting pressure at the health care system, especially in northern Greece and Epirus (see map below).
Regional units in lockdown
Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias announced that the Regional Units of Ioannina and Serres change category from Tier 3 (Orange) to Tier 4 (Red – Lockdown!) as of 06:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2020, due to epidemiological load.
Naxos and Rodopi also change category from 2 (Yellow) to 3 (Orange) and Drama from 1 (green) to 2(Yellow).
Due to absence of infections, Amorgos changed category from 2 (Yellow) to 1 (Green).
Regarding the crowding of the faithful in Thessaloniki, Hardalias said that such scenes and crowding have to be avoided.
