Unprecedentedλυ incident against the rector of one of the biggest universities in Athens. A group of people entered his office, hung a sign on the rector’s neck and posted the humiliating picture on some websites. Greeks from the whole political spectrum have expressed their repulsion noting that as this action reminded them of times of the past.
Wearing hoods a group of some 15 people reportedly entered the office of Rector of Athens University of Economics and Business, Dimitris Bourantonis, on October 29.
They abused him verbally, threatened him and hung a sign on his neck in favour of squatting.
They also smashed computers and equipment and sprayed slogans on the walls and furniture.
The attackers then posted a photo of the rector with the sign on his neck an anti-authoritarian website.
The Prosecutor’s office in Athens launched an investigation.
Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis pledged to find those responsible and said he will issue a warrant.
Education Minister Niki Kerameos condemned the attack. saying that “those who think that with bullying, fascism and violence they will terrorize academics and go unpunished, they are badly mistaken..
“At the same time she said that “those from the academic sector who show tolerance for the violation of the University asylum and academic freedom, must show responsibility.
Political parties condemned the incident.
Saturday afternoon, a self-proclaimed anarchists organization called “Combat Solidarity Initiative” resumed responsibility for the attack at the rector.
Later, authorities announced to offer €100,000 reward to anyone providing information about this organization.
