Supermarkets will close half an hour earlier, at 20:30 from next Monday, November 16, because of the night curfew, Deputy Development and Investment Minister Nikos Papathanasis told state broadcaster ERT on Thursday. He said also that the plan to open supermarkets on upcoming Sunday, Nov 15, has been cancelled.
“At the moment the flow at supermarkets is normal and there are enough products, there is no reason for them to open on Sunday,” Papathanasis said.
He added that on Thursday and Friday they will operate as usually until 09:00 pm and on Saturday until 08:00 pm also as usually.
The measure will apply for as long as the lockdown is in force, Papathanasis said.
Reason for the earlier closure of supermarkets is that consumers have time to be at home at 9 pm when the night curfew starts.
There is also talk about earlier closure of kiosks and mini markets, official announcement by the Development Ministry should be expected on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the government Greece announced a nationwide night curfew from 9 pm until 5 am. It is imposed as of Friday, November 13, 2020. There are only three reasons that citizens can use to be out of home during the night curfew.
