Greece extends the lockdown restrictions until Decmber 14, 2020, the government spokesman announced on Thursday.Te extension of the lockdown that has been imposed since November 7 was expected as the second wave of the pandemic does no decrease to a degree sufficient to open the economy.
“The increased epidemiological load does not allow us to open the economic activity,” spokesman Stelios Petsas said.
Exempted is the operation of seasonal stores selling Christmas items as well as the sale of such items in supermarkets as of December 7, Petsas added referring to an official announcement by the Development Ministry earlier on Thursday.
The government spokesman said that according to the latest data there is stabilization and reduction of coronavirus cases but at a slower pace than expected. There is still pressure in many hospitals in Northern Greece and the epidemiological burden is high, so the gradual opening is postponed over time and the existing restrictions measures are extended. until Monday 14 December.
Decisions on the next steps are expected to be taken tomorrow, Friday, following meetings of government officials with epidemiologists.
According to scenarios circulating on media, schools and restaurants are not expected to open before Christmas, however, the operation of small shops and hairdressers under strict protection measures is considered.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday that bars and entertainment facilities will remain closed until the vaccine is in the country.

The biggest mistake!!!
This is incredibly dumb. Lockdowns don’t work and everyone can see it, so hey let’s extend the orwellian bs for some more because the people need to be made weak. This thing has a 99.98% survival rate. Lockdown kills more people. Wake up
Why not target areas that have produced the greatest number of cases? Whats the point of punishing small towns , villages and islands making paulpers out of small business owners. The economy is bad enough
without adding endless restrictions. The mask idea doesn’t seem to be working so well witnessed by inrcreased cases and the government plan to open shopping during the Christmas season will only produce more cases. I repeat, what’s the point of more restrictions.
We are doomed if idiots like some of the previous posters are out and about spreading the virus. Why can’t people follow some basic procedures for the good of all? Masks do work. Hand-washing does help. Social-distancing is important. How can these unscientific dolts make dangerous and erroneous claims like there is a “99.98% survival rate?” Even if the survival rate were 99%, that results in ten times the number of deaths caused by the flu. Many of those who do survive will be physically and mentally impaired for the rest of their lives. If Greece and elsewhere had followed the examples of Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam and China they wouldn’t be facing such a cruel and harsh winter. But too many of our citizens are too selfish and uneducated to think of any others but themselves.
I am in full agreement with Clio. For those who deny the potency of the virus, you have just joined the long line of conspiracy theorists that seem to be proliferating. These are people who deny the obvious because it is inconvenient and uncomfortable to accept the facts. Try using your brains instead of your mouths.
