Greek Police carried out over 135,000 control checks on New Year’s Eve and Day and imposed 2,668 fines for violation of safety measures against the coronavirus and lockdown violations. Six people have been arrested.
57,498 inspections in total, including 13,159 at Athens International Airport.
1,001 violations wearing of masks , social distancing and people’s movement restrictions. Of these 806 violations, 249 were in Attica and 107 in Thessaloniki in northern Greece.
Six people were arrested for operating businesses – most of them cafe/bars – in violation of lockdown measures.
Eight infringements of safety regulations by private businesses. 5 people were detained in Volos in central Greece.
Fines for simple violations of the measures such as not wearing a mask or not keeping social distancing measures are at 300 euros. For businesses that opened for illegal gatherings fines were heavier.
Hosts of private gatherings found to host more than 9 people in their homes were fined with 3,000 euros, and each guest with €300.
Some people thought that the massive police presence over the New Year was wrong and antisocial. These figures prove these doubters wrong. If it were not for the police presence these people and many more would have flouted the law and spread the virus.
