Corona-parties flourish, authorities threaten with special teams (video)

Some 3,000 students and youngsters gathered at the premises of the University of Thessaloniki on Saturday night for a huge party with DJ, loud music and dance as if there were no pandemic and safety measures. Participants uploaded videos on social media.

It was reportedly just one of the so-called corona-parties across the country on Saturday as the youth can hardly comply with restrictions that ban music in bars restaurants.

These parties are organized via social media and usually become known the next day.

Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias announced on Friday that special teams will be assigned with the duty to crack down on corona parties and fines will be imposed.

He said that these parties can become coronavirus super-spreading events.

He stressed that epidemiological indicators remain high and the wall of immunity through vaccinations is still far away.

Meanwhile, health authorities are concerned about the illegal parties on the island of Mykonos in rented villas, a practice that flourished also last summer, in the first year of the pandemic.

  1. While I would not take the risk of attending any of these youth parties, I refuse to condemn them. Young people have been treated with contempt across the world, with their psychological condition completely ignored, their education disrupted very badly and with long-term implications, and their future compromised to the point that they can legitimately question what there is for them.

Moreover, the risk to young people in contracting Covid-19 is so low that it can be ignored, other than for those with underlying health conditions. They know this, and are making a stand for their group rights within a democracy. I fully support them, despite being two generations older. The world craziness about destroying everything in order to protect old people, who are mostly on death’s doorstep, has to end. Now.

  2. Unless countries fast-track the vaccination rollout, a large part of the population is at risk for Covid and it’s short and long term health and economic ramifications. I personally lost 2 acquaintances (in their 40’s and 50’s) to the ravages of this virus. It’s no joke! The United States, as of late, is a good example of how to ramp up for, and administer the vaccines. Mask mandates have been dropped, the economy is percolating once again, and things are returning back to normal (for now). Greece relies heavily on it’s tourism economy, and is trying desperately to administer the vaccine and get back to normal. The EU needs to do a better job of procuring and distributing vaccines, and Greece needs to provide easier access to and from vaccine sites. Until then, these moronic selfish idiots that hold ‘youth parties’ need to realize that developed countries are ‘turning the corner’ and are slowly getting back to normal, but it takes time. As carriers and spreaders of Covid, they are doing their communities a disservice. They are not the only ones going through this challenge, as it’s affecting all age groups in some way. We are all in this together. Maybe they should go talk to the little girl who lost her father due to Covid, or the middle aged lady suffering long term debilitating side effects due to this virus. These youths can still have fun getting together with just a few friends or family, without forming super-spreader street mobs! If they actually follow the news and read, they would know that we are coming out of this pandemic, and attempting to reach some kind of herd immunity, which takes time. What they are doing, while understandably borne of frustration, is a bit premature. Don’t ruin it for the rest of us, assholes!

  3. A good job some of these young ones have,ny been asked to do what was asked of my father when he was 17. Dropped on a beach in Normandy while some German did his best to blow his head off. I,ve been lucky enough not to have to go and fight a war. They are only being asked to behave, It,s not a big ask. I hope they can live with themselves if they take this virus home to their parents and Grandparents.

    • My family fought in two world wars, and no-one was happy about it. There is an analogy, of course, between the abusive treatment of youngsters (as cannon fodder, in WW I) and the abusive treatment of them now. However, I am sure that is not at all the point you would like to make. Was it perhaps “Kids are lucky these days; in my dad’s day they were sent off to war”? If so, may I suggest that you sod off?

  4. I checked the video uploads. It reminds me of a football championship more than a party. Chanting and jumping and fiery torches. I’ve seen this at a PAOK game.
