A 55-year-old man in Thessaloniki was fined with the huge amount of 270,000 euros for having abandoned nine kittens on a plot of land in the Kalamaria area.
The man was arrested on Saturday night, after two eyewitnesses saw him abandoning the kittens including a cat mom with her four newborn.
For each kitten the man was fined with €30,000 and additional €300 for not having micro-chipped them.
Speaking to several media, the man said that his son had brought these stray kittens home and he had told the young man that he cannot take care of them. In this context he decided to get rid of them and sought an land plot where he abandoned them.
Since a couple of years, the Animal Protection Law in Greece provides an administrative fine of 30,000 for each animal abuse.
Although provided by law, these types of penalties seem pretentious and unenforceable though.
When the Law first came out, it was reported that if the fine is not paid then the amount is booked at the violator’s tax office account.
However, we never have learned what happens in real life and if the fine is deleted secretly on a quiet day.
