Blackout in Athens: People trapped in elevators, traffic lights off

Blackout occurred in several districts of central Athens on Wednesday, July 22. People have been trapped in elevators, traffic lights are out of order, business were force to halt their operations in times of digitization and hundred thousands are without A/C or fan on the hottest day of summer 2026.

Affected from the blackout are mainly the districts of Kypseli, Exarchia, Kolonaki and Gyzi and are reportedly without power since midday on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

According to Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO/DEDDIE), a medium-voltage line that supplies power to the specific areas has been cut off.

Several traffic lights have been out of service, while many shops are without power.

At the same time, the Fire Department has received several calls about people trapped in elevators, and for this reason firefighters with vehicles are moving to the above areas to free the people.

According to HEDNO, operations are already underway to restore the power.

UPDATE

According to latest information power outages have been recorded also also in the suburbs of east Athens Alimos, Argyroupoli and Zografou, as well as in Menidi and Metamorfosi in the West of the Greek capital.
