Gas leak at a gas station in the port city of Piraeus at noon on Wednesday, July 22, has led to evacuations of apartment buildings, modifications in Metro Line 1 and the Tram as well as to traffic stops.
Two apartment buildings have been evacuated reportedly as a precaution.
Firefighters and police officers have rushed to the scene.
Ambulances also rushed to the area as there was a very strong gas smell and citizens might needed help.
An alarm has been sounded in Piraeus after a gas leak at a gas station on Omiridou Skylitsi Street with strong Fire Department forces rushing to the scene, while traffic has been blocked and public transport means have been forced to modify their routes.
Managing company STASY has announced the temporary suspension of Metro Line 1 (Urban train ISAP Piraeus-Kiffisia) and the Tram network.
Due to a gas leak, it was decided to stop traffic at two points:
The firefighting forces had to be reinforced and 29 firefighters with 11 vehicles from the Fire Services of Piraeus, Megara and Elefsina are at the scene, while a special team from the 1st EMAK is also on the way.
Suspension of ISAP and Tram routes in Piraeus
By order of the Hellenic Police the STA.SY. announced the temporary suspension of the operation of parts of the Metro Line 1 and the Tram network.
The operation of the “Piraeus” station on Line 1 (ISAP) of the Metro is temporarily suspended, with services operating only on the Faliro – Kifissia section.
At the same time, the circulation of trains on Tram Line 7 on the Akti Poseidonos Piraeus – Moschato section is temporarily suspended, with service operating on the Asklipieio Voula – Kallithea section.
