Live Briefing
At the live briefing on Monday, the head of the National Vaccinations Committee said that the platform for vaccination appointments for the age gorup 12-15 will open on July 30, 2021.
“The Committee has approved the vaccination of this age group,” professor Maria Theodoridou said adding that the parents can make the appointment..
According to Theodoridou, the reasoning of the decision of the National Vaccination Committee involves three reasons:
-To protect the health of the children themselves. she stressed that children with underlying chronic diseases should be vaccinated.
-To maintain the lifelong learning of children but also to continue their social activities.
-To protect the vulnerable citizens as children are a source of transmission of the virus.
Children will be vaccinated with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines as there are studies in only these two vaccines.
However, according to the President of the National Vaccination Committee, the number of children who participated in the research is limited but their effectiveness against covid disease has been proven.
In particular, based on the data presented by Ms. Theodoridou, the research to date has been done for the Pfizer vaccine in 2260 children aged 12-14, while the Moderna vaccine was tested in 3732 children.
As for the side effects, they are rare and mild, Theodoridou aid, and they concern myocarditis and pericarditis, which, however, are treated since the conditions are mild with a good outcome.
According to clinical studies, side effects affect 18 cases in 1 million vaccinated, she underlined.
