Greece’s Civil Protection imposed a so-called “mini-lockdown’ to the Regional Unit of Messinia in south Peloponnese and at the same time it extended the Covid-restrictions in the regional units of Chania, Heraklio and Rethymno on the island of Crete.
The mini-lockdown in Messinia aiming to stem the spread of coronavirus goes into effect at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
According to a Civil Protection announcement, the restrictions are:
- Night curfew between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. except for medical emergencies and work
- Music ban in clubs, bars and cafés to prevent overcrowding.
Parties and other gatherings of more than 20 people are also forbidden, both in private and public setting, with the fines for violating this restriction ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 euros.
The Civil Protection also announced that existing restrictions imposed on the regional units of Chania, Heraklio and Rethymno will remain in force.
Restrictions in all 4 regional units are valid until, Friday, September 3, and will be reviewed on weekly basis depending on the course of the virus infections.

Throughout 2020 and until June 2021, when a large proportion of the population living in Attica flocked to Messenia, this regional unit was one of the most spared of the entire country, together with Laconia. Barely a few cases were reported daily. It just took 2 months to get to this situation.
