Theodorakis: Dates to pay respect at Athens Cathedral changed

Another change in ceremonies to honor great composer Mikis Theodorakis as his body lie in state Monday to Wednesday and not Tuesday to Thursday as originally planned. Reason for the change is that downtown Athens will be closed due to the Rally Acropolis media reported.

The body will lie to state at the Cathedral of Athens so that the public can pay their respect to the great composer and political activist.

The Cathedral will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday (Sept 6-7) and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept 8), when the funeral service will follow.

Plans for his burial have been temporarily halted by a court as his last wish was to be laid to rest by Chania on the island of Crete but his daughter wants to have him buried by Corinth where the family has a home. The court will take up the case tomorrow, Monday.

Also the 3-day national mourning as declared by the Prime Minister was cut into two after municipalities revolted to have scheduled events like concerts and festivals cancelled on Saturday due to the national mourning. Only flags on public buildings flew half-mast.

Mikis Theodorakis passed away in his home in Athens on Thursday. He was 96 years old.

PS I have to say I find all these changes particularly disturbing for a man who gave so much to Greece and the world. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mikis raising up to the sky sending us a huge moutza*.

*moutza is a typically Greek hand curse: the palm is extended, the fingers are spread out, the hand thrusts forward to the one to be cursed. It is usually accompanied by the word “Orse!” which means “Here, take it!” .
