Greece’s health authorities announced on Thursday 2,322 new coronavirus cases and 42 deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospital Intensive Care Units decreased further to 359.
At the Live Briefing on Thursday, health experts said that infections numbers are shrinking and the pandemic has been showing a stabilization in the last three weeks. This fact slightly opens a window of optimism, however, the situation will be re-evaluated in a few weeks due to the schools opening on Sept 13.
Nevertheless, there are areas with high epidemiological burden, mainly because the vaccination coverage is limited.
According to pediatric infectious disease professor Vana Papaevangelou, these are the six areas where the viral load is high:
- Pieria, Imathia, Pella, Evritania, Argolida and Ilia.
It is noteworthy, however, that in areas with a high rate of vaccination, there is no increase in infections.
For example in Western Attica, where only 40% of the population has been vaccinated, with the result that all areas have a higher viral load and number of infections.
Deputy Health Minister Mina Gaga strssed that “the risk of disease is up to 10 times lower in vaccinated citizens.”
