Greece’s Health Ministry launched on Thursday the procedure of the requisition of the services of doctors in the private sector to help in state-run hospitals struggling under the burden of the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The requisition decision is directed at doctors of specific categories who are active in regions of central and northern Greece, where hospitals are at their limits: These regions are Western, Central and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as well as Thessaly in central Greece.
Authorities are asking for pulmonologists, pathologists and general practitioners stating that their services will be needed, initially, for the period of one month.
The Ministry had given a deadline for doctors to voluntarily register for the service at public hospitals. The deadline expired last Sunday.
By Tuesday, only around 40 private doctors had register, much fewer than the over 100 ones needed to meet the needs of public hospitals treating Covid-19 patients in the above mentioned areas, as media reported.
The requisition decision was published on the Official Gazette on Thursday morning.
