Daily coronavirus cases broke another all times record on Tuesday and Covid-related deaths exceeded the benchmark of 21,000. Greece’s health authorities announced 50,126 confirmed cases and 61 deaths in past 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals has decreased slightly increased to 619.
Infections in Attica reached almost 20,000.
Despite the sharp increase, the government announced on Tuesday evening that schools will open on January 10 as scheduled with enhanced testing for students and teachers. More on a separate post.
The government set a price cap of 47 euros on PCR tests in private diagnostic centers. the measure will go on effect on January 6.

61 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, brought the total of pandemic victims to 21,053*. Of these, 95.1% had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.

619 patients are on ventilators in hospitals, from 626 a day earlier. Their median age is 64 years and 59.3% are men. 79.8% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over.
Of the total in intubation, 525 (84.81%) are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated and 94 (15.19%) are fully vaccinated.
3,782 Covid-patients have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.
452 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change: +9.43%). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 429.
The median age of new infections is 36 years (range: 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of the deceased is 78 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).
