The Omicron variant of Covid-19 has reportedly stroke also the Greek Police with over 2,000 officers to have fallen ill and tested positive in recent days. The majority of active cases are in the Headquarters in Athens.
200 police officers declared that they were sick with Covid-19 in just six hours, reports CnnGreece on Wednesday.
In the face of the possibility of serious gaps in the operation of critical services, the leadership of Greek Police has already asked as many employees in offices and secretarial services to work from home.
In an emergency meeting of high ranking police officers, the protocols for the first response services such as the Rapid Response Units and Dias teams on motorcycles and the Security services were discussed.
Among the measures are that patrols and police presence on the road should not be reduced in any way, and for this reason couples on patrols, whether pedestrian or motorized, will remain the same and will not take turns in order to avoid spread of the virus.
It has also already been requested from the police departments that police officers work either in the morning or in the afternoon and that the two shifts do not come into contact with each other. For officers at security services those police officers who are outside the building in case of investigations should avoid contact with officers inside the offices.
So far, the data show that most active cases are in the General Police Directorate of Attica GADA) with over 800 people, notes CnnGreece.
Following the reports, Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos reassured that their is no problem in the operation of the Greek Police as “out of 56,500 police officer only 20 are hospitalized with Covid-19.”
PS We hope that the minister has also heard of some measure called “5-day isolation” otherwise citizens will start running in fear of getting the virus the moment they see a police officer nearby.
