Erdogan calls on EU to show “same sensitivity” to Turkey’s application as to Ukraine’s

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday called on the EU to show the “same sensitivity” for Turkey’s application to join the bloc as it showed for Ukraine’s membership bid, slamming member states for being “not sincere.”

“Will you put Turkey on your agenda when someone attacks (us) too?” he said, speaking at a news conference in Ankara.

“Turkey has been waiting since the 1960s to join the EU and now the debate on Ukraine has begun. We consider Ukraine’s accession efforts positive. But why is Turkey not a member?”

Erdogan: “We appreciate the efforts to get Ukraine EU membership. But I ask the EU members, why does Turkey’s membership in the EU worry you?”

Erdogan called on Ukraine and Russia to immediately stop fighting and to “contribute to world peace,” adding Ankara was not opposed to NATO enlargement.

NATO member Turkey shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia and has good ties with both.

On Monday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for Ukraine’s “immediate accession” to the EU.

“We call on the European Union for the immediate accession of Ukraine under a new special procedure,” Zelenskyy said in an address to the nation.

Turkey is a candidate to join the EU but its accession talks have been stalled over a number of issues. Turkey applied for EU membership in 1987, and accession talks began in 2005. But negotiations stalled in 2007 due to objections from the Greek Cypriot administration on the divided island of Cyprus, as well as opposition from Germany and France.

On Tuesday, European Parliament adopted a resolution demanding EU candidacy for Ukraine a day after eight countries in the bloc — Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, and Slovakia — expressed their support for Zelenskyy’s call.

Erdogan reiterated that Turkey, which has the second largest army within the alliance, supports NATO’s expansion.

On Monday Turkey said it was closing its Bosporus and the Dardanelles Straits to warships enacting the Montreux Convention, partly limiting the passage of some Russian ships from the Mediterranean but also blocking of NATO warships to reach Russia.

  1. White elephant in the room ALERT,
Your an Islamic based dictatorship, currently run by a trouble making despotic madman ,who is suddenly worried about the other lunatics that he’s been aligning with for the last decade.
You Erdogan ,need to take a long hard look at yourself, and ask would you allow North Korea to join turkey?, Because currently, there is more chance of that happening that you getting in the EU.
The credibility of the EU as a effective force against threats to its civilian population, was let’s face it, until the last week, a joke, it is an organisation that was toothless, incapable of making a decision. what it does do well is spend inordinate amounts of other people’s money on talking alot , this must change now ,or risk creating a Russia NATO cold war ,
The EU of today must be protected by itself, it literally sleep walked into this mess, and can no longer rely on others to fight it’s battles, allowing Turkey to join it’s ranks will ultimately make that task impossible as it will remain another UN when security threats are a priority.

  2. Erdogan’s is a Muslim who is against the west, jails his journalists, judges, and academics. His economy is also feeling the effects of his autocratic reign, sanctioned from F35s after buying S400’s from a Russia he is reluctant to sanction, aligning himself with other autocrats, Hamas, the Muslim brotherhood, etc., seeking to pirate from another EU member, etc., it is so endless.

And he has the audacity to request EU membership? Is he serious?
