Earthquake rattles with 5.2 R the island of Kythera

A strong earthquake jolted with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale the island of Kythera, south of Peloponnese, on Wednesday morning. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or material damage.

While some international seismic institutes gave the preliminary magnitude with 5.4-5.5 R, the Geodynamic Institute in Athens said the undersea earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 R and occurred at 4.51 a.m. local time.
Red line marks the big fault line in the south Aegean and the Ionian Sea.
Its epicenter was 41 km off Kythera north-western coast and its focal depth at 60 km.
The earthquake was felt in Kalamata, Chania, Heraklio as well as in several areas of Attica.

Head of the Greek Earthquake Planning and Protection Authority (OASP), Efthimios Lekkas, appeared reassuring saying that this earthquake does not cause concern due to its big focal depth. Speaking to Skai FM, Lekkas  ruled out the possibility of a bigger tremor.
