An impressive and at the same time terrifying waterspout was formed close to the coast on the first “leg” of Halkidiki peninsula on Sunday morning.
Immediately sunbathers at the beach of Xenia by the village of Paliouri in the south of Kassandra grabbed their mobiles to capture the spectacular phenomenon.
They uploaded several videos and pictures on social media.

#υδροστροβιλος pic.twitter.com/SjOYx5bIbh

Phenomena of waterspout occur on days with great heat and humidity and is the vortex between a “storm cloud” and the surface of the sea. The main cause of this phenomenon is the large temperature difference between water surfaces and upper atmospheric layers.
Although weaker than tornadoes, waterspouts have a wind speed of over 100 km per hour. But when they reach land, they dissipate.
Most waterspouts are observed near the tropics and less frequently in the mid-latitudes.
