First snow falls on ski resorts in northern Greece (video)

The first snow of the year has covered landscapes in northern Greece’s ski resorts as a result of the temporary deterioration of weather conditions.

This is the first snow to fall on the slopes and may not be enough for skiers, however it gives fans of winter sports a reason to smile and be optimistic that the ski season will eventually start.

The first snow fell on Tuesday at Kaimaktsalan, Seli, 3-5 Pigadia, Vassilitsa, Falakro, Lailias and Metsovo at altitudes over 1,500m.

The recent high temperatures for the season since the start of December kept skiers and snowboarders away from the pistes.

If the current weather conditions hold and snow coverage improves, then some ski resorts will open immediately.

In Agios Athanasios, Kailmaktsalan, the children’s track operates with artificial snow system and this when temperature allows, state broadcaster ERT reported on Monday.

What worries the professionals of tourism and catering in the surrounding mountain resorts are the reservations for the next few days as they hope for a change in the weather, so that accommodations and ski resorts can be filled with people, ERT added.
