Εmployees at the Greek Culture Ministry will launch a 24-hour strike on April 25, 2023 to protest a law turning five of the most important museums in the country.
Employees strike aims to protest the law that changes the status of five major museums from public to private entity.
These museums are: the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine & Christian Museum of Athens, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki and the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
The museums will continue receiving state funds but will also be independently responsible for fundraising and outreach campaigns but also be able to lend artifacts abroad for a period of 50 years.
The strike decision was taken by the Union of Employees of the Ministry of Culture & Sports of Attica, Mainland and Islands in collaboration with the Panhellenic Federation of Culture & Sports Ministry Employees (POE-YPPO).
Employees will stage a protest gathering at the National Archaeological Museum in downtown Athens at 12:00 noon.
