The “Golden Calamari of Mykonos” – The Sequel 2023

Mykonos is once again in the spotlight due to a local entrepreneur who charged an exorbitant price for calamari (squid) to a couple of US tourists. The “golden calamari” of Mykonos” was accompanied by “golden milkshakes” and a “golden” local beer.

The tourists complained on a popular social media platform and posted a receipt which looks like no proper that is no legal and not tax-conform receipt.

The family of tourists was asked to pay €360 for one salad, two milkshakes, a beer, a mojito cocktail, bread for two, and calamari that was charged €148.50.

As they claim, the prices in the price list were different from those on the receipt. When they asked the restaurant for an explanation, the officials tore up the upper part of the receipt where the company’s details were written and forced them to pay.

The complaint was posted on Reddit platform two days ago, on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 and went viral also on Greek media.

It should be recalled that also in 2019 Mykonos came to spotlight worldwide for charging 591 euros for 6 portions of calamari.

Given the current inflation if a portion was 98.5 euros in 2019 it is fair that it went up to 148 in 2023 – according to entrepreneur’s calculations and logic, of course. 🙄

Note that a portion of kalamari at a good restaurant in Athens starts at 23 euro per kilo if fresh and much lower if deep frozen which is usually the case.

Or the tourists just ordered a tentacle of the legendary Kraken…

    • Why do you comment before reading🤔🙄
prices shown on the menu were much lower than what the thieves charged.

    • I hope that a tax official with a couple of police officers arrive at this establishment in the very near future, perhaps closely followed by someone from the planning office

      • Have you ever gone to Greece ? Corruption is widespread !!! Cops, businesses… Even the priests ! A few decades ago, I was in Rhodes and a local priest got caught at Customs, smuggling loads of cigarettes cartons stickers under his robes, around his legs 😈

      • Stories like this will burst the bubble of good work the Greek tourism board are doing….in today’s socially connected world, this will already be a world wide story…. One crook in Mykonos makes extra, smaller islands and more local locations on the mainland will pay the price next year with fewer bookings…. The police need to be all over this, to get a better story out there, to help next year’s tourist figures.

  1. This type of corrupt practice must be contested immediately. The criminal will try and reverse responsibility to the victim. You must stand firmly against them and ask for the police. They will try to threaten your departure from their locality due to the legal process and use the a police threat to do this. This is all just fear tactics. Don’t pay anything but a fair price.

  2. Tax police are where? For us on Paros it is good ,tourists are not staying in Mikonos anymore and come to us. But in general it is bad for Greece 🇬🇷

  3. I would rather fight them to death than pay.
But fighting would not happen, Greeks can shout and make gestures but they don’t want to fight.
So don’t be afraid. Offer 50 euro, record it with phone, if they not accept walk away.
