Citizens’ Protection Minister resigns after sea trip amid wildfires crisis

Minister of Citizens’ Protection Notis Mitarakis resigned early Friday afternoon, citing “personal reasons.”

The Prime Minister has accepted his resignation, its the official government position, while the background is politically more juicy: “it was PM Mitsotakis who asked his resignation,” state ERT TV reported.
Mitarakis’ resignation follows an article by daily kathimerini, according to which “Mitarakis was spotted on a remote island enjoying the sea on Thursday [amid the wildfires crisis!], while he went onboard of a yacht where he stayed for several hours. Swimmers in the area could not believe their eyes. Ηe returned to Athens in the afternoon.”

Note that the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection is responsible for the country’s public security services, such as the police, the fire service and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

Mitarakis was hardly a month on this post after the June elections, and served as Migration Minister in the first New Democracy government under Mitsotakis.

Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports an former government spokesman Yiannis Oikonomou  has been appointed to the position of the new minister in Citizens’ Protection.

PS according to latest info, the Minister was on Patmos. I hope he did not use any state helicopter to fly there…
