Costumes for Olympic Flame ceremony divide Greeks (POLL)

The new costumes to be worn at the lighting ceremony the Olympic Flame were presented at an event last week. They will be worn by priestesses and the High Priestess.

The costumes were designed by internationally renowned Greek designer Mary Katratzou and reportedly inspired by the Ionian capitals of the antique.

They were presented at an event organized by the Hellenic Olympic Committee.

The new costumes with prints of ancient columns will be worn by priestesses and the Prioress at the lighting of the Torch of the Olympic Flame ceremony. The new costumes will replace  the highly aesthetic costumes in use since several decades.

Although the ancient costumes are of professional origin, some social media users did not like them and expressed their negative opinion on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Many described them as “Monastiraki-” or “”Ethnic-Kitsch” targeting an audience of foreign tourists. Others asked whether they will be used during the Carnival that ended on March 17, or by the dancers of Greece’s Eurovision representation.

Others noted they reminded them of “barcode” and some criticized that there was no “strapless” dresses in Ancient Greece.

The Olympic Flame will be lit in Ancient Olympia on April 16,, marking the start of the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
