Ghost-village emerges from Evinolimni waters, western Greece (Video)

Scanty rainfalls and even less snowfalls had a settlement in western Greece emerging from waters of a lake 32 years later. The ghost-village of Kalatheika emerged from the waters of the artificial lake of Evinolimni in the mountainous area of Nafpaktia in early spring.

The prolonged drought and the complete lack of snowfall this winter resulted in the water level to fall to its lowest level in recent years, bringing to the surface the  “sunken” settlement.

According to data of the weather station of the National Observatory in Agrinio, there were only four rainy days in January (total of 82.4 mm) and about the same number in December (62.2 mm).

“The eerie images of the houses of the settlement Kalatheika of Neochorio Nafpaktia, came to light for a while causing awe and at the same time brought back to our memory a past that few really knew, notes travel-ispiration.gr that made the video and the story.

Through a tunnel with a total length of 29,393 m, the waters of the Evinos reservoir are transported and channeled to the Mornos reservoir for the water supply of Attica.

Evinolimni with its wonderful landscapes and picturesque villages is 81 km north of Nafpaktia and 52 km south of Karpenisi.
