Forest fire raging in S. Crete: 4 injuries, evacuations of 4 villages

An elderly local man and one firefighter have been injured during the forest fire that is raging out of control in Mavros Kolymbos area of Lasithi on the island of Crete since Saturday morning.

Late Saturday afternoon, the number of injured rose to four: a woman broke her arm, while a second firefighter was injured.

Residents in four villages, Mavros Kolymbos, Achlia, Agia Fotia and Galini,  received alert messages via emergency line <112> to evacuate their homes and move to towards Koutsoura.

At the same time, a bed-ridden elderly woman who was living alone was transported to safety.

According to latest information, the 74-year-old man has been intubated due to burn injuries in the respiratory ways as well as burn injuries in hands, feet and face and transferred to the hospital in Heraklio. He reportedly tried to extinguish the fire burning in his home yard, thus ignoring advice’s to evacuate. He in in critical condition.

The firefighter is being treated for a sprained foot in Ierapetra hospital, local media neakriti.gr reported.

The fire broke out shortly before 7 a.m. in a forest area near the village Mavros Kolymbos, while strong winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort were blowing in the area, the fire Department said in a statement.

Dozens of volunteers as well as over 170 firefighters with 30 fire engines and 2 helicopters are operating to extinguish the fire in Mavros Kolymbos, local cretalive.gr reports at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

According to state broadcaster ERT, winds are still blowing with 7 Beaufort.

There are reports of damages in homes and greenhouses.

Two more fires broke out in the wider area of Ierapetra, specifically in the Males, Ierapetra, in low vegetation, and in Amoudares, Ierapetra, near a greenhouse.

These two fires have been set under control, the Fire Department announced on Saturday afternoon.

The fire in southern Crete is the second large one within a week after the one in Pierian Mountains.
