A barometric low will affect the weather in Greece with its main features forecast to be rainfalls and sporadic storms, temperature drop, strong winds and Sahara dust.
The bad weather front is forecast to reach Greece as of Tuesday afternoon, April 16 of our country from the afternoon of Tuesday 16/04 and last until early Thursday, April 18, 2024.
According to the latest forecast data from the meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens, the main characteristics of the bad weather will be
- rains and storms
- strong to stormy southerly winds in the Aegean Sea
- significant drop in temperature
- increased concentration of Sahara dust in the atmosphere
On Tuesday, the weather will initially affect the north-western mainland and the Northern Ionian Sea and it will gradually strengthen and extend to the rest of the mainland, the rest of the Ionian and Crete as well as the north and eastern Aegean by noon on Wednesday.
There is a possibility of hail (mainly of small size) mainly in the north, east and south-east continental areas as well as in the East and North Aegean.
During the night to Thursday, the phenomena will be limited to Thrace, the eastern parts of the Aegean and the mountains of the western and southern mainland, showing a significant weakening at the same time.
According to the categorization of rainfall episodes (Regional Precipitation Index), which is applied by the Meteo unit of the National Observatory of Athens, the rainfall episode for Wednesday 04/17 is classified as Category 2 (Moderate). The map in Figure 1 shows the cumulative amount of rain in millimeters expected until the evening of Wednesday 17/04.

The southerly winds in the Aegean will gradually strengthen and on Wednesday they will reach 7-8 Beaufort locally. During the night to Thursday, they will turn to west-winds with intensity of 6-7 Beaufort.
In the Ionian, the winds are not expected to exceed 4 Beaufort until noon on Wednesday, when they will become westerly up to 5 B and locally up to 6 B. The map in Figure 2 shows the areas where the wind will exceed 6 Beaufort on Wednesday 17/04 as well as its prevailing direction.

Temperature will show a drop of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, while its drop in the northern continents will reach 8° to 10 °C locally on Wednesday locally.
4-5 °C in the rest of the continents retreating to normal levels for the season. The map in Figure 3 shows the expected drop in maximum temperature on Wednesday 04/17.

Finally, the concentrations of Sahara dust in the atmosphere will be increased and there will be mud showers in places.

I don’t know who is making these forecasts but they have to be on very good drugs. In Athens itself is nothing. Maybe next time name the regions by its name where the bad weather front will be!

down here in the islands we had furious winds and clouds yesterday and today. a light sprinkling during the night was just enough to leave spotted coats of dust on surfaces, cars, etc. the wind died down to nothing just in the past 2 or 3 hours and humidity went way up. Laundry hung out this morning was dry by mid-day (if it didn’t get blown off the line) but now the air is still, cool, and damp. no idea what its like in athina.
