From the podium of the Greek Parliament and during a Live Streaming, Kyriakos Velopoulos, the leader of nationalist party Ελληνική Λύση (Greek Solution) tore the Prespa Agreement, that is a copy of the version as published in the Official Gazette.
Seeking 5 minutes of publicity ahead of the upcoming European elections in less than a month, Velopoulos claimed that the tearing of the Prespa Agreement was a dignified and patriotic action.
Presenting himself as the “real Macedonian Warrior,” the populist politician told the Plenary :
“We will honor the tear of Konstantinos Karamanlis [founder of new Democracy] for Macedonia. If ND also wants to honor him, there is only one solution. And if the government can’t, we can. There is only one solution for the ND. If ND can’t do it, we will. This is the Prespa Agreement and if there was a decent national patriotic social government would do this here. Bring the Cooperation Memoranda here, now, so we can all vote against them.”
He added “You say that the president of Skopje is to blame, but who elected the VMRO? It was chosen by the people of Skopje. So our problem is the logic with which they learn their history” Velopoulos said and tore the Prespa Agreement.
It was more than clear that tThe victory of the nationalist and Prespa Agreement denier VMRO in North Macedonia last week and the provocation of the country’s president to omit “North” from her oath would spark a storm also in the Greek political landscape.
Main opposition party, SYRIZA, the party that made the Prespa Agreement possible in 2018, said on Wednesday that it would bring the three Cooperation Memoranda to the Parliament and will ask for their approval – something that ruling ND has not done so far.
Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said on Tuesday that ND has not brought the Memoranda to the Parliament as it wanted to have joker in its hands.
