A tragedy in Halkidiki: A lightning struck and killed a 13-year-old girl on Friday afternoon. Her mother has been slightly injured.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the girl was walking with her mother at the beach of Posidi, when the lightning struck around 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
An ambulance rushed to the area and trasnferred the girl to the Health Center of Kassandra, however, every effort to revive the girl was in vain. She was killed on the spot.
Together with her parents, the girl had gone to the beach for a swim.
Despite the fair weather in largest parts of Greece, there was heavy rainfall in Halkidiki on Friday.
The Kassandra Police Department is conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident.

Speaking to media, the girl’s father said that the family’s carefree moments turned into a nightmare when the lightning struck his daughter and his wife, killing the 13-year-old instantly.
He said that they had gone for a swim and when they saw the storm coming they got out of the sea.
While they were on the beach, lightning struck in front of them and his wife and daughter fell on the sand.
“My girl didn’t get up again” he said adding that they came out of the sea to protect themselves and were not even ten minutes on the beach when the lightning struck.
He was slightly injured in the incident and the girl’s mother is in good health but remains in a state of shock.
According to media information, the family from Moudania also in Halkidiki were bathing in Poseidi in Faros and when they saw the storm they went out of the water and tried to go to the car.
Omg, that’s awful. I am in Thessaloniki and I was welcoming the rain storms due to the break of the oppressive heat. But now knowing that it killed a young girl, I feel awful. That’s very unlucky and very sad! Possidi has a lighthouse, you would think the lighting would have hit that instead. 🙁
What a cruel thing to happen. My heart goes out to the parents. And RIP to the little girl.
