University professor arrested for setting four wildfires in SE Attica

Police has arrested a 65-year-old university professor who is accused of setting four fires in June in the area of Vari, south-eastern Attica.

According to state broadcaster ERT, the suspect was a sociology professor at Panteion University and also taught at the Officer Academy of the Greek Police, while he was known to public due to frequent appearance on television channels as expert and has published dozens of books.

The man was arrested after police examined video evidence that showed him near the fires. In two cases he was seen captured by CCTV camera setting the fires and moving away in slow pace.

The man reportedly lives with his family near the site of the fires and it is notable that he was in dispute with municipal authorities for not cleaning up the plots in the area around his house.

He denies the accusations and considers the relevant video footage insufficient to prove his guilt.

However, the judicial authorities are investigating whether the 65-year-old has anything to do with the devastating fire, 1.5 months ago, in a forest area near Varis-Koropiou Avenue.

The suspect is scheduled to appear before the prosecutor on Thursday.
